We were delighted to welcome international vocal coach Hilary Llystyn Jones to give Wherwell Singers a masterclass in October.
Hilary, native Welsh, studied singing, piano and harp at Chetham’s School of Music and continued at the Guildhall School of Music. She has taught choral scholars and students at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge and provides vocal tuition to many cathedral choristers between international teaching engagements.
Hilary provided a range of vocal tuition in the chill of Wherwell Church, encouraging us to visualise our vocal folds and ensure that they were vibrating at their best, suitably moist and supported with good breathing, posture and effort. She encouraged us to smile or cry to provide a good and resonant chamber for the sound, whilst stressing that we should make the best of the instrument we are given rather than strive for something different.
An almost full turnout of the choir sang tentatively after a thorough visual and tactile tour of the larynx, but Hilary’s sensitive and clear guidance left us with many lessons upon which to grow.
Our thanks to a very able teacher, we hope you will come to our Christmas Concert, Hilary, and see whether we have learned our lessons.
